THE 9th MEETING OF THE PAN-ORTHODOX EPISCOPAL ASSEMBLY OF BRITAIN AND IRELAND
The 9th Meeting of the Pan-Orthodox Episcopal Assembly of Britain and Ireland took place on 6th November, 2014 at Thyateira House, London.
The following bishops were present: His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira & Great Britain (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople) His Eminence Archbishop Elisey of Sourozh (Patriarchate of Moscow) His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Berlin, Germany & Great Britain (Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia) His Eminence Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia (Archdiocese of Thyateira) His Grace Bishop Athanasios of Tropaeou (Archdiocese of Thyateira) His Grace Bishop Ignatie of Mures (Romanian Diocese of Spain and Portugal)
Welcoming the participants, the Chairman, Archbishop Gregorios, stressed the importance of facilitating the participation of the members of the Assembly not resident in Britain in order to make the meetings more fruitful and constructive. His Eminence noted that among the recent events that he had attended in his capacity as Chairman of the Episcopal Assembly there had been a meeting of Christian leaders at Lambeth Palance dedicated to the plight of the suffering Christian minorities in Iraq and Syria and throughout the Middle East. It had been followed by a meeting of religious leaders and politicians at Westminster dedicated to the same question. On behalf of the members of the Assembly, he congratulated His Eminence Metropolitan Kallistos, on the recent occasion of his 80th birthday.
The bishops discussed various matters prepared by the Pastoral committee, including the preparation of an agreed list of local saints and issues connected with Christian burial and the practice of cremation. Other matters discussed included youth work, problems connected with divorce and remarriage and the questionable canonical status of a number of clergy and communities operating in Britain.
The bishops agreed: 1) To approve the composition of a special committee for preparing the agreed list of local saints. 2) That a register of Orthodox cemeteries should be compiled. 3) That the next Episcopal Assembly should be held on 24th April, 2015. 4) That they would concelebrate the Divine Liturgy on 25th April, 2015 at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Ennismore Gardens.
The meeting concluded with a festal lunch offered by the host, Archbishop Gregorios.
